Mini-review: Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi

I did my best not to form an opinion until I watched all 6 episodes. Now, that I have, my feelings didn’t really change from how they were at the beginning.

The show definitely has its moments. But overall, all I could think of was this being a wasted set of opportunities. There are obviously people in that company who can create good new characters. But it doesn’t look like any of them were on board for this show. I wouldn’t mind it so much if the stories were written well. But the plot was painfully uneven. I think you could condense this into 3 or 4 episodes and not miss a beat (it might even improve the pacing). And look… I know this is science fiction. But stories even this genre need to follow a reasonable amount of logic. If they want to twist and break canon, fine. There should at least be a strong payoff, though. They want to keep interrupting the supposed rematch of the century with a pointless subplot? Fine. But at least make it worthwhile.

It’s a bit of a shame, really. I think Obi-Wan Kenobi was Lucasfilm’s best hope in consolidating the fanbase. But all it does is continue to polarize it.

Most of those who don’t like the Reva/Third Sister aren’t racist or sexist. We just know it’s possible to create a well-written complex angry female Inquisitor that’s actually menacing rather than annoying. Trilla/Second Sister practically has the same background as Reva. Yet, the difference in writing and acting are night and day.

I read somewhere that Obi-Wan Kenobi was written in a similar manner as for a video game. Maybe they should’ve let the actual video game writers take a shot at it, as well.
